PAEDIATRIC IN-TOEING
儿童足趾内侧行走

A child learning to walk indoors, highlighting bare feet and paediatric podiatry conditions like intoeing.

What Is In-toeing? In-toeing, commonly known as pigeon-toed gait, is a condition where a child’s feet point inward instead of straight while walking or running. It is a common condition in children, with most cases resolving naturally by age 8 or early teenage years. In-toeing is usually painless, but in some cases, intervention may be required to correct severe misalignments or associated complications.   Causes of In-toeing Metatarsus Adductus – The front part of the foot curves inward, typically caused by limited space in the womb during development. – Visible at birth or soon after. Tibial Torsion – The shinbone twists inward, often becoming noticeable when a child starts walking. Femoral Anteversion – The thighbone rotates inward, causing knees and feet to point inward. This condition usually appears by age 5–6.   Symptoms of In-toeing Visible inward turning of one or both feet during rest or motion. Frequent tripping or falling while walking or running. Clumsiness during physical activities. In severe cases, knees may also turn inward.   How Is In-toeing Diagnosed? Observation of walking and standing patterns by a podiatrist. Physical examinations of the feet, knees, and hips for alignment or rotation issues. X-rays or additional imaging may be recommended to confirm the cause and severity.   Treatment Options for In-toeing Mild Cases: Often resolves naturally with growth. Moderate to Severe Cases: Casting or Bracing: For infants with metatarsus adductus. Custom Orthotics: Insoles or footwear designed to correct posture and alignment. Physiotherapy: Exercises to address misalignment and improve gait. Surgery: Rarely needed, reserved for severe deformities that do not improve with other treatments.   What Happens If Left Untreated? Persistent tripping and clumsiness. Potential for joint or muscle pain later in life. Increased risk of postural deformities like scoliosis or lordosis. Possible self-consciousness due to visible gait abnormalities.   In-toeing Prevention Tips Discourage sitting in the ‘W’ position, which can worsen rotational deformities. Encourage good posture and regular physical activity. Use supportive footwear that promotes proper alignment. Seek early intervention if gait abnormalities are noticeable.   Why Choose Physio & Sole Clinic & Women And Children Centre (WACC)? BUNION
拇趾外翻

Close-up of a person’s foot showing a bunion, highlighting common foot deformities and related discomfort.

Often described as a bump on the side of the big toe, a bunion is a misalignment of the bones of the big toe. It happens when the hallux (the big toe) leans towards the second toe instead of pointing forward, causing a bulge to form. Causes Many factors can cause bunions to form. Most people with bunions have a strong family history of bunions over generations. One may inherit a foot type or walking pattern that impacts foot function, which may result in a bunion to develop. Bunions can develop early in life, and may become more pronounced during one’s teenage years. This is called Juvenile Hallux Valgus or Hallux Abducto Valgus (HAV), and they are mostly caused by genetics. Ill-fitting or inappropriate footwear (e.g. pointed shoes or heels) can worsen a bunion.   Common Signs and Symptoms A bony prominence on the side of the big toe. They may first appear to be swollen, red, tender, or painful around the base of the big toe or ball of the foot. However, there may be no pain at all. Bunions are progressive and have varying stages of development.   Diagnosis of Bunions Physio & Sole Clinic offers non-surgical bunion treatments in Singapore. As specialists in lower extremities’ anatomy, our podiatrists can assess your feet with a thorough lower-limb physical examination, and provide an accurate diagnosis of your foot condition.   How can a Podiatrist help? Looking for a bunion doctor in Singapore? You may not need surgery. Our podiatrists can offer a wide range of treatments to provide symptomatic relief as well as long-term non-surgical care to prevent bunion progression tailored to your foot condition. We will also take time to educate our patients about common misconceptions in Singapore regarding the effectiveness of bunion correctors or splints. The goal of our treatment is to help you live pain-free and reduce the angle by a few degrees. If you’ve already had surgery, our podiatrists can guide you in preventing relapse by determining and eliminate the underlying causes of the problem. Early non-surgical treatments can prevent bunions from worsening and prevent pain. The podiatrist will conduct a thorough evaluation of your legs and feet to identify the cause of the bunion. These assessments include: Hip examination Knee examination Ankle and foot examination Standing and gait analysis Footwear analysis and advice Based on the assessment, the podiatrist will be able to construct a treatment plan for you, which may involve fitting general or customised foot orthoses , changes to footwear, sports taping, and/or exercises specific to the foot and lower limb. These treatment help to alleviate the discomfort or pain that you may currently experience due to the bunion. However, only surgery will be able to reverse the changes in your foot structure that has already occurred. In rare and more severe cases where the pain is persistent despite conservative management, you may be referred to an orthopaedic surgeon. Surgery can be an effective option in correcting a serious bunion condition if proper screening is done to identify suitability for surgery.   Frequently Asked Questions on Bunion   Contact Us If you’re suffering from bunions, Physio & Sole Clinic offers bunions management at convenient locations across Singapore. What are Cracked Heels? Cracked heels, also known as heel fissures, occur when the skin on the bottom of your heels becomes dry, hard, and splits. While minor cracks may only appear unsightly, severe cases can cause pain, bleeding, or even infections, making walking difficult and uncomfortable.   What causes Cracked Heels? Lifestyle Factors Standing for long periods, especially on hard surfaces. Walking barefoot or wearing open-backed footwear. Taking long, hot showers or baths. Environmental Factors Dry or cold weather causes skin dehydration. Frequent climate changes during travel. Health Conditions Diabetes, eczema, or psoriasis. Fungal infections or hypothyroidism. BLISTERS
水疱

Close-up of a woman’s heels with a blister plaster on, beige heels in the foreground, highlighting foot discomfort and care.

A blister is a small pocket of fluid that forms on various areas of the body. It is common to develop blisters on your feet. It is, however, highly important to manage a blister promptly to avoid disruption to your daily activities such as walking or exercising.  Blisters are usually formed when there is excessive friction, pressure or moisture on particular areas of the skin.  Common causes of blisters: Ill-fitting Footwear Hyperhidrosis/Sweaty Feet Eczema Allergic Reaction Chicken Pox Burns Fungal Infection Chemical Exposure How to prevent blisters? Wear cotton socks for better moisture absorption. Avoid socks made of nylon or synthetic materials Apply an antiperspirant spray if you have sweaty feet Wear appropriately fitted footwear. Shoes should not be too tight or narrow, which may cause friction Wear protective equipment when handling heat or chemicals What should you do if you have a blister? For mild blisters, you should cover the blister with a simple plaster for protection while it heals. They will naturally dry and heal on their own. You should never attempt to burst or drain a blister yourself as there is a high risk of causing infection once the blister is exposed.  If the blister is already exposed, do apply an antiseptic cream (e.g. betadine) and cover the area with a plaster. Keep your feet clean and dry as much as possible, and avoid wearing tight fitting shoes.  If the blister is painful and affecting your daily activities, you should seek treatment from a podiatrist, who will be able to help drain or deroof the blister using sterilised instruments, and advise on the appropriate aftercare to prevent recurrence or infection. Feel free to seek free advice from our friendly podiatrists by sending in a photo of your blister to our Whatsapp service at +65 9175 4929.

BRUISED NAILS
脚趾甲淤青

Close-up of a bruised toenail showing discolouration, often caused by trauma or pressure, highlighting common foot injuries.

What Are Bruised Nails? Bruised nails, or Subungual Haematomas, occur when blood collects beneath the toenail due to trauma or pressure. This condition often leads to discolouration, pain, and swelling under the nail. While minor cases may only be a cosmetic concern, severe bruising can cause throbbing pain and may result in nail detachment if untreated.   Causes of Bruised Nails Direct Impact Dropping heavy objects on your toenail Stubbing or kicking furniture Stepping on the toe during activities or accidents Repetitive Stress Wearing tight or poorly fitting footwear for extended periods Running, hiking, or playing sports without proper footwear Biomechanical Issues Abnormal foot mechanics, such as overpronation, placing uneven stress on toenails   Symptoms of Bruised Nails Discolouration: Black, blue, or purple spots under the nail Throbbing pain or tenderness Swelling around the toenail Lifting or partial detachment of the nail Thickened or ridged nail growth over time   How Is It Diagnosed? A podiatrist will examine the affected toenail for signs of discolouration, swelling, or detachment. In some cases, an X-ray may be recommended to check for fractures or underlying bone injuries.   Bruised Nail Treatment Options Non-Surgical Treatments Trimming or filing damaged nails to relieve discomfort Draining accumulated blood under the nail (Subungual Haematomas) to alleviate pressure Cleaning and applying antibiotics to prevent infections in torn or lacerated nails   Advanced Care Custom orthotics or footwear to address biomechanical issues Nail removal surgery for severe injuries: Partial Nail Avulsion: Removal of part of the nail Total Nail Avulsion: Removal of the entire nail to allow for complete healing   Pain Management Use of dressings or topical treatments to reduce pain and minimise the risk of infection   What Happens If Left Untreated? Ignoring bruised nails can lead to: Ongoing pain and discomfort Nail infections, such as cellulitis Permanent nail deformities or chronic detachment Rare but serious conditions like subungual melanoma, which can mimic bruised nails   Prevention Tips Wear properly fitting shoes with adequate toe room Avoid repetitive pressure on toenails during activities like running Use protective footwear during heavy lifting or contact sports Regularly trim toenails straight across to minimise the risk of injury or ingrown nails   Why Choose Physio & Sole Clinic for Bruised Nail Treatment? At Physio & Sole Clinic, our highly skilled podiatrists provide expert care to diagnose and treat bruised nails effectively. CORNS AND WARTS
胼胝/老茧/鸡眼/足底疣

Close-up of a foot with a visible corn on the sole, highlighting a common podiatry condition requiring treatment

Do you have a growth of hard skin on your foot? You may be having a corn or a wart. Unfortunately, these two conditions are often misdiagnosed as their appearance can look very similar to the untrained eye. It is important to have an accurate diagnosis in order to ensure it is resolved fully.  Appearance/Symptom Differences A lump or bump on the foot Corn Wart 1) Circular in shape 1) Cluster of small bumps, irregularly shaped 2) Yellowish in colour when it is dry 2) Pale-coloured, more white than yellow 3) No black dots, has smooth skin lines 3) Dry, crusty surface with small black dots, no visible skin lines Multiple lesions on feet 4) Appears in the same region on both feet 4) Different spots on the feet, often only on one foot and not the other.  5) Does not spread, no adjacent lesions 5) There can be more than one lesion in close proximity to each other due to spreading of wart infection. Pain 6) Pain on direct pressure 6) Pain on pinching the area Base of lesion 7) No bleeding during removal 7) Bleeds profusely on removal of hard skin 8) Core of lesion can be thoroughly removed by a podiatrist, but hard skin will recur due to excessive pressure on area 8) Once the ‘root’ is removed and the wart is treated fully, there will not be any hard skin growing on that area Management Plan 9) Requires regular treatment by podiatrist to prevent pain 9) Average of 4-8 weekly sessions of debridement, application of acid and cryotherapy for complete resolution Warts Warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). The virus hides within, divides and replicate within human cells . The virus attacks the skin through direct contact, entering through possibly tiny cuts and abrasions in the outermost layer of skin. Photo of a Wart After infection, warts may not become visible for several weeks or months until it grows big enough to pinch on the underlying nerves to cause pain or discomfort. Treatment varies. At Physio & Sole Clinic, we engage in sharps debridement and the application of concentrated salicyclic acid and cryotherapy, which is the most effective evidence-based practice in treating warts. Corns Corns are specially-shaped callus of dead skin. Corns and calluses generally form when the skin tries to protect an underlying area from injury, pressure or rubbing. Unsure whether the lesion on your foot is a wart or a corn? We can help! Feel free to snap a photo of the affected area and send it to us by Whatsapp. Just click on the button below!

FUNGAL NAIL INFECTION
趾甲真菌/霉菌感染

A close-up of a thickened and discoloured toenail showing signs of fungal nail infection, a condition treatable with proper fungus nail treatment" Let me know if you'd like variations for different platforms (e.g., SEO-focused vs social media friendly).

Fungal nail infection, medically known as onychomycosis, is a common condition that can affect both fingernails and toenails, though toenails are more frequently impacted. This stubborn infection occurs when microscopic fungi penetrate the nail bed through tiny cuts or separations between the nail and nail bed. It’s important to understand that early intervention with professional medical nail fungus treatment in Singapore can: Prevent permanent nail damage Stop the infection from spreading to other nails Reduce risk of bacterial complications Avoid the need for more aggressive treatments later Improve the cosmetic appearance of affected nails   Causes of Fungal Nail Infection (Onychomycosis) Fungal nail infections develop when microscopic fungi invade through cracks in your nail or surrounding skin. The primary causes include Underlying health conditions: Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or a weakened immune system can increase the risk of infection. Nail injuries: Minor skin or nail injuries can provide an entry point for fungi. Environmental exposure: Walking barefoot in damp public areas like swimming pools, communal showers, or gyms can increase exposure to fungi. Wearing tight and non-breathable shoes: Shoes that cause excessive foot sweating create a warm and moist environment that promotes fungal growth.   If you’re experiencing any symptoms, early fungal nail treatment is key to preventing long-term damage. Book an appointment with our podiatrists today for professional assessment and care.   Common Symptoms of a Fungal Nail Infection (Onychomycosis) Paying attention to subtle changes in your nails’ appearance, texture, or smell can help detect the infection before it becomes severe. Here are some signs to watch for that may indicate a fungal nail infection: Discoloration: Yellow toenails are often the first signs of infection. The nail may also turn white, black or green. Thickening: The nail may become thicker than usual, making it harder to trim and maintain. Brittleness: Infected nails often become brittle, crumbling or breaking easily. Separation from the Nail Bed: The nail may detach from the underlying skin, creating a gap between the nail and nail bed. Foul Odour: A foul smell may develop from the infected nail. Redness and Swelling: The skin around the nail may become red, sore, or swollen.   Fungal Nail Infection Treatment Options Antifungal Medication Antifungal nail creams are applied directly to the affected nail. These are often used for milder cases or in combination with oral medication.   Nail Removal In severe infections, removing the affected nail may be necessary. This procedure exposes the nail bed, allowing targeted antifungal treatment and promoting the growth of a healthy new nail.   Treatment by Podiatrist Personalised debridement and advanced light therapy are used to manage infections, enhance nail health, and prevent the spread of the fungus.   How Can a Podiatrist Help? At Physio & Sole Clinic, we offer effective nail fungus treatment in Singapore. Our team of podiatrists is trained to diagnose fungal infections as well as recommend and administer different types of toenail fungus management. We offer a conservative approach including advanced, pain-free light therapy. During your podiatry appointment, our podiatrist will trim and thin the nails to physically remove affected areas of fungi, allowing better penetration of the antifungal gel. It effectively kills fungi while preventing the infection from spreading to neighboring nails. The nail fungus treatment may require 3 months or longer, depending on the severity of the infection. At Physio & Sole Clinic, Photodynamic Antimicrobial Therapy (PACT®), the latest state-of-the-art antifungal light therapy, is available. This painless method has no adverse side effects. It is scientifically proven to be extremely effective in destroying fungal cells, and our clinic has had great success with fungal nail treatment. How Does Photodynamic Antimicrobial Therapy (PACT®) Work? Photodynamic Antimicrobial Therapy (PACT®) involves the interaction of light, a photosensitive agent, and oxygen to produce a localised chemical effect. This photochemical reaction induces fungal cell death without affecting surrounding tissue, which means it is a completely safe nail fungus treatment method! A single PACT session involves the following: The podiatrist will confirm diagnosis of nail fungus and check for suitability of Photodynamic Antimicrobial Therapy (PACT®). All affected fungal nail areas will be trimmed and filed down with sterile, specialised podiatry instruments. A gel is then applied to the nail and left to absorb for 5-10 minutes. This gel stains the fungal cells, making them sensitive to the light emitted by the PACT LED lamp. The PACT LED light is subsequently applied to penetrate the nail and destroy fungal cells.   How Is Nail Fungus Treatment Different From Going For A Pedicure? Our Podiatrists are trained medical professionals in managing nail conditions. We use sterilised and specialised medical instruments when removing affected fungal nails. We often attend to patients who developed fungal infection on their nails due to pedicure parlours not sterilising their equipment. We will be able to provide permanent long-term nail fungus treatment solutions.   Our Success Cases in Relieving Fungal Nail Infection With Fungal Nail Treatment Our patients typically come in after trying various toenail fungus treatmentd but had no significant improvement. Their fungal problems have plagued them for many years. 20-year-old fungal nail issue after nail fungus treatment   Nail Fungus Treatment Charges Podiatry Consultation $80 – $120 Follow-Up Podiatry Consultations $50 Nail Treatment $90-150 Photodynamic Light Therapy (1 Nail) $80 All prices are before GST. CHILDREN AND ADULT FLAT FEET
扁平足

Side view of a pair of flat feet, highlighting the common podiatry condition of flat feet in children and adults.

Physio & Sole Podiatry: Flat Feet Also known as “fallen arch” or “pes planus”, this condition occurs in approximately 20-30 percent of the population. One acquires flat foot when the arch contour is lowered on the inner side of the sole. They can occur during and throughout childhood, while they can also develop in adults due to injuries causing a collapsed arch, muscles overuse, pregnancy or with certain medical conditions. Having flat feet may lead to other issues later on in life if left untreated. Common Causes of Flat Feet Genetics Weak arches/structures in the lower leg and foot Age Injury Diabetes (Neuropathy, nerve dysfunction) Signs and Symptoms of Flat Feet There are people with fallen arches who experience no pain or problems in their feet. Most, however, may experience pain not only in their feet but in other areas such as ankles, knees and lower back. Some signs and symptoms one may experience with flat feet include: Absence of a gap between the ground and arch when standing Heel tilting away from the midline Rolling in at the ankle (overpronation) Walking with toes turned outwards Tiredness in ankles and lower legs Pain in the shin Difficulty standing on tiptoes Swelling that occurs on the inside of the ankle Pain in the arch of the foot, heel, calf, knee, hip, or lower leg area These signs and symptoms may vary according to the severity of the condition. Paediatric / Children’s Flat Feet Infants’ feet do appear flat as the arch has yet to be formed due to low muscle tone and weak ligaments. There is also a fat deposit which can hide the natural curve of the arch area. This fatpad usually disappears when the child is about 2-3 years old. When should I be concerned for my child? Almost all children’s feet appear to have flat feet until they are 3 years old. While some children have flat feet and have no problems at any stage in life, many do suffer from ailments such as arthritis and muscle problems, which can start as early as their teenage years. This can seriously affect their quality of life. If the answer is ‘yes’ to these questions below, you may wish to make an appointment for your child to have a thorough examination: Is the shape of your child’s feet different looking? Are the arches of the foot not forming after the age of 3? Does your child walk strangely or fall often? Does your child have pain in the feet, legs or hips? Do you have a family history of foot problems? How can Our Podiatrist Help? Our podiatrist will conduct a thorough evaluation of your legs and feet to identify the cause of your flat foot problem. A detailed history and physical examination will be conducted. Dynamic and static assessments will include: Hip examination Knee examination Ankle and foot examination Standing and gait analysis Footwear analysis and advice From the findings, the podiatrist will construct a treatment plan for you. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment may include the application of foot orthoses , footwear changes, or specific exercises. In cases of rigid flat feet and severe flexible flat feet that are unresponsive to conservative treatment methods, other specialist care may be arranged if required. For milder conditions, conservative treatment methods such as customised insoles, strapping and immobilisation are adequate in effectively managing flat feet. However, if they are deemed ineffective, surgery may be necessary to relieve pain and improve the flexibility of the foot. If untreated, metatarsalgia can lead to: Persistent pain spreads to other parts of the foot, ankle, knee, or hip. Gait changes or limping, leading to further biomechanical issues. Development of irreversible deformities such as claw toes or bunions. Progression to chronic conditions like avascular necrosis or joint stiffness.   Prevention Tips Wear well-fitting, supportive footwear with proper cushioning. Avoid prolonged periods in high heels or barefoot walking on hard surfaces. Use orthotic inserts for extra support. Maintain a healthy weight to reduce pressure on your feet. Stretch and strengthen foot muscles regularly. Exfoliate calluses and keep the feet moisturised to prevent additional pressure points.   Why Choose Physio & Sole Clinic?
