Quick Overview on Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness and swelling — most commonly affecting the big toe. If left untreated, it can lead to infection and pus formation.

At Physio & Sole Clinic, our experienced podiatrists provide safe, effective and minimally uncomfortable ingrown toenail treatment, including conservative care, nail bracing (Onyfix) and nail surgery when required. Physio & Sole Podiatry: Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are a common and painful condition of the feet, where the nail grows into the surrounding skin. This issue frequently occurs on the sides or ends of the big toes but can affect other toenails as well. If left untreated, ingrown toenails can lead to infections and pus formation.

In Singapore, this condition is particularly common amongst adolescents and young adults. If you experience any of the symptoms below, it is essential to seek timely treatment to relieve pain and prevent complications.

Causes of Ingrown Toenail

  • Improper toenail trimming (cutting too short, too deep, or leaving sharp edges).
  • Wearing tight-fitting shoes or high heels that put pressure on the toes.
  • Prolonged shoe wear, especially in athletes, leading to excessive perspiration.
  • Nail trauma or injury.
  • Fungal infections that cause thickened or curved toenails.

Signs & Symptoms of Ingrown Toenail

  • Sharp pain/tenderness with or without pressure exerted on the corner or side of the nail
  • Redness and swelling around the toe or affected part of nail
  • Pus collection at the region where the nail is ingrowing

How Can Our Podiatrists Help?

At Physio & Sole Clinic, our experienced podiatrists provide effective ingrown toenail treatment with minimal discomfort. This ensures immediate pain relief for an ingrown toenail, and we closely monitor nail growth to prevent recurrences.

Our podiatric services include:

  • Conservative management: Regular nail trimming and ingrown toenail removal, filing, and applying cotton packing for prevention.
  • Nail bracing with Onyfix: A flexible brace that straightens curved nails, preventing future ingrown toenails.
  • Nail surgery: If conservative measures fail, we offer ingrown toenail surgery to remove the affected part and apply a chemical to stop the offending nail from growing back.

How To Prevent Ingrown Toenails?

  • Avoid wearing tight shoes that press on the toes.
  • Trim nails straight across rather than rounding the edges.
  • Use a file to smooth sharp edges after trimming.

Frequently Asked Questions on Ingrown Toenails

How is ingrown toenail treatment different from a pedicure?

A podiatrist is a trained medical professional who uses sterilised instruments and precise techniques for ingrown toenail removal. Pedicures may increase the risk of infection or leave sharp edges that lead to recurrence.

What do ingrown toenails look like?

Ingrown toenails often appear red, inflamed, and sore. Infected nails may ooze pus and cause significant discomfort.

Will an ingrown toenail heal on its own?

Most ingrown toenails do not heal naturally and require professional podiatrist treatment to resolve the issue and prevent future occurrences.

Can I cut my ingrown toenail myself?

It is not recommended to cut an ingrown toenail by yourself, as this may lead to further complications like infection. Seek podiatrist advice for proper treatment.

When should I consult a podiatrist?

If you are experiencing persistent pain, swelling, or infection, it's essential to consult a podiatrist for an effective solution.

Had my ingrown toenail treated by Dr Kerra. She is assuring, detailed, and patient as she takes the time to explain the procedures and the follow-up care required. Not to mention the positivity and ever-present charm, making the process painless and unusually enjoyable.

Thank you very much Dr Kerra! 🙏

We brought both my parents to see Jia Lin — my dad for a painful callus and my mum for an ingrown toenail. Before the visit, both of them were having difficulty walking and were clearly uncomfortable.

Jia Lin was incredibly gentle and reassuring throughout the session. She was especially patient and caring with my elderly parents, taking the time to explain what she was doing and making sure they felt at ease.

What we truly appreciated was the clear follow-up advice she gave. She explained how to care for their feet at home and what to do on a daily basis, so we left feeling confident and well-informed.

Thank you, Jia Lin, for your professionalism and kindness. We’re very grateful for the improvement in my parents’ comfort and mobility. Highly recommended!

Suspected I had an ingrown toenail so wanted to get it resolved before CNY. After doing research online, I contacted Physio & Sole Clinic to try and fix an appointment. Moments later, Women & Children Centre by PSC contacted me to continue the appointment fixing at the Katong branch. Yes, they do treat male patients as well. When I went for the appointment, I was greeted by the friendly receptionist. Soon after, the Podiatrist Jia Lin attended to me. She was very professional, knowledgeable and assuring. Before she took every course of action, she will explain in detail what she was going to do. Homegrown practice with transparent charges and no hidden fees. Highly recommended!

I recommend Dr SK who works regularly at the Orchard branch to anyone who has any foot related issue. He has helped me permanently remove a partial part of my toenail due to reoccurrence of ingrown toenail.
He explains the procedure very clearly, allowing me to understand any risks and make an informed decision if there were other choices.
He is also not pushy which helps build a healthy doctor-patient relationship.

During the procedure he also makes small chats to distract me from any pain and lighten the atmosphere. It has been a very pleasant journey to talk to him every appointment.

Since then at each review (total of 3) he has been ensuring my toe recovers well and informs me of any steps I need to change to better my recovery process.
I have since made a full recovery.
Will definitely miss patronising this clinic!

Staff at the reception are also friendly which makes the entire clinic such a joy to visit.

Had gone here for curved ingrown toenail. All podiatrists very professional, but Tash stood out to me most for her kind nature and her professional, warm approach. Sadly it was her last working day today.

Highly recommend this clinic
