The Worst Shoes for Kids: What You Should NEVER Let Them Wear!

  • Podiatry
A mother kneels to tie her young daughter's school shoes, ensuring a proper fit for healthy foot development. Proper footwear selection is essential for children's foot health, as recommended by podiatrists.

As parents, we always want the best for our kids—including the right shoes to support their growing feet. But did you know that some shoes can actually harm their foot development, causing long-term posture and mobility issues? Let’s uncover the worst footwear choices and what you should look for instead!

What Happens When Kids Wear the Wrong Shoes?

Wearing unsupportive shoes in childhood can lead to:

  • Flat feet & arch pain – Lack of support can cause the arches to collapse.
  • Toe gripping – Kids may curl their toes unnaturally to keep shoes in place.
  • Heel pain & overuse injuries – Inadequate cushioning can strain growing bones.
  • Ankle instability – Poor heel support increases the risk of falls and sprains.

Here’s The List Of Shoes You Should Avoid for Your Child!

1.Sandal

Sandals may be convenient, but they often lack arch support and heel stability, increasing the risk of flat feet, tripping, and toe gripping (where kids curl their toes to hold onto the shoe).

Better option: Closed-toe sandals with adjustable straps, like Keen sandals, provide both comfort and support.

Comparison of two types of children's footwear—open-toe pink sandals with minimal support vs. sturdy, closed-toe sports sandals with proper grip and arch support, recommended for foot health.

    2.Flip Flops & Slippers

Flip Flops and other slippers have a thick, cushioned sole that might seem comfortable but actually lacks the necessary structure for proper foot alignment. Kids who wear them frequently may develop heel pain (Sever’s disease) or overuse injuries.

Better option: Choose closed-toe sandals with adjustable straps for a secure fit, like those from The Tiny Trooper. These provide better support while keeping little feet comfortable!

    3.Heeled Shoes: Straining Young Feet

High heels, even low ones, put unnecessary pressure on the toes, Achilles tendon, and lower back. They also force kids to walk unnaturally, which can impact balance and joint health.

Better option: Choose flat, flexible shoes that allow natural foot movement. Like the ones from TwoLittle Feet that offer ergonomic, kid-friendly footwear designed to support growing feet while keeping them comfortable and stable!

4.Roller Shoes: High Risk of Falls & Foot Injuries

Roller shoes may look fun, but they increase the risk of ankle sprains, falls, and poor foot mechanics due to the uneven weight distribution. Kids wearing them often develop foot fatigue and posture issues.

Better option: If your child loves movement, opt for lightweight sneakers with good grip instead.

A contrast between two footwear choices—roller shoes, which may compromise foot stability, and sturdy, well-fitted shoes designed to support balance and foot health in active children.

How Do You Know What Shoes To Get?

    Here’s What To Look For:

    • Firm Heel Counter – Provides ankle stability
    • Wide Toe Box – Allows natural toe spread
    • Flexible Outsole At Forefoot Area – Promotes natural movement
    • Secure Fastening – Velcro, laces, or straps for a snug fit

Here Are Some Brands Recommended By Our Podiatrist Mummies:

    • Keen – Great for outdoor adventures
    • Two Little Feet – Designed for growing feet
    • The Tiny Troopers SG – Supportive and stylish options

    How Can A Podiatrist Help?

Beyond general shoe recommendations, a podiatric assessment provides personalised insights into their foot structure, walking pattern, and any underlying issues to ensure they get the right footwear for optimal support, comfort, and long-term foot health.
