CRACKED HEELS
足跟皲裂

Close-up of cracked heels, showcasing dry skin and common foot problems associated with discomfort and improper foot care.

What are Cracked Heels?

Cracked heels, also known as heel fissures, occur when the skin on the bottom of your heels becomes dry, hard, and splits. While minor cracks may only appear unsightly, severe cases can cause pain, bleeding, or even infections, making walking difficult and uncomfortable.

What causes Cracked Heels?

  1. Lifestyle Factors

    • Standing for long periods, especially on hard surfaces.
    • Walking barefoot or wearing open-backed footwear.
    • Taking long, hot showers or baths.
  2. Environmental Factors

    • Dry or cold weather causes skin dehydration.
    • Frequent climate changes during travel.
  3. Health Conditions

    • Diabetes, eczema, or psoriasis.
    • Fungal infections or hypothyroidism.
    • Sjögren’s syndrome or other chronic conditions.

Symptoms of Cracked Heels

Visual representation of cracked heel symptoms including dry, flaky skin, pain and discomfort, visible cracks, and redness or swelling, each illustrated with a corresponding image and green checkmark for identification.

  • Dry, flaky skin forming calluses.
  • Pain and discomfort, especially while standing or walking.
  • Visible cracks, sometimes accompanied by bleeding.
  • Redness, or swelling if infected

Treatment Options

  • At-Home Care

    • Apply moisturiser 2–3 times daily to keep heels hydrated.
    • Gently exfoliate with a pumice stone to remove hard, dead skin.
    • Wear supportive footwear to cushion the heel and prevent pressure build-up.
  • Professional Care at Physio & Sole Clinic

    • Debridement: Removal of thick calluses using a scalpel for smoother skin.
    • Specialised Moisturisers: Prescribed dermal foot balms to nourish and protect the skin.
    • Heel Strapping: Bandages to support healing by reducing skin movement.
    • Pressure Analysis: Assessment of heel pressure to prevent further damage.

What Happens If Cracked Heels Are Ignored?

  • Pain and discomfort can worsen over time.
  • Deep cracks may lead to bleeding or infections like cellulitis.
  • Diabetics risk developing serious complications, such as diabetic foot ulcers.

Prevention Tips

  • Moisturise your feet daily using moisturiser.
  • Wear supportive footwear and avoid walking barefoot.
  • Inspect your feet regularly for early signs of dryness or cracks.
  • Limit long periods of standing or exposure to hard surfaces.
  • Stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
