Physio & Sole Podiatry: Corn & Callus Removal in Singapore

Appearing as hard patches of skin, calluses typically form at the tips of toes, between toes, under the big toe or at the ball of the foot. Corns are differentiated from calluses by an inner central ‘core’.

Causes, Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Our feet are integral in the performance of our day-to-day activities. They withstand the pressures of movement, footwear constraints as well as our full body weight. Calluses and corns on feet develop as the body’s natural method of protection. However, they can become extremely painful if left untreated.
  • Occasionally, repeated pressure and friction may occur on specific areas of the foot, leading to the formation of corns and calluses.
  • Over-the-counter treatments, such as corn paint or plasters, only treat symptoms and not the problem itself. Furthermore, they often damage healthy skin surrounding the corn with prolonged application.

What is the difference between Corns & Calluses?

Similarities
  • Thick layers of the skin
  • Caused by repeated pressure or friction at the spot where the corn/callus develops
Differences
Corn Callus
Smaller and deeper Often larger than corns but may vary in size and shape
Has a hard centre surrounded by swollen skin

How can Our Podiatrist help?

  • Our podiatrist are foot specialists who can help with foot corn and callus removal by gently debriding the hard skin of the callus with sterile instruments and the centre of the corn can be carefully removed.
  • The podiatrist will also recommend ways to relieve pain, isolate the cause and prevent the problem from recurring .
  • The podiatrist will provide footwear advice to prevent corns and callus development.
  • In certain cases, special shoe inserts (orthoses) may be prescribed to reduce excessive weight bearing forces on the feet and provide long-term relief.

Frequently Asked Questions on Corns & Callus Removal in Singapore

Are there any home remedies for corn and calluses?

You can try to soak the corns in warm water to soften them before removing the thickened skin with a foot file, pumice stone or washcloth. Avoid using sharp objects to remove the thickened skin.
However, if you have diabetes or other underlying conditions that can affect blood flow, it is best not to use tools to remove the skin on your foot. Instead, visit a podiatrist to have them carefully removed with sterile instruments to avoid complications.

I keep getting corn/calluses in the same spots. Is there anything I can do to prevent them from coming back?

Moisturise your skin daily and wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with some cushioning if possible. If you keep getting corns or calluses in the same spots, consult a podiatrist for further footwear advice. Custom made insoles (orthoses) may be prescribed to reduce excessive weight bearing forces on the feet and provide long-term relief.

Are corn plasters effective in removing corn?

Corn pads or plasters with salicylic acid are not recommended as they can irritate your skin and lead to infection.

I have diabetes. Is there anything special I need to know about corn and calluses?

If you’re diabetic, calluses and corns may sometimes develop complications. It is not advisable to remove the corns/calluses with home remedies.
